According to an article titled “Truth, Sojourner (1797-1883)” found in Student Resource Center – Gold, at the age of 46, Sojourner began to travel widely, and was public speaker who was not only effective, but also loved to be the center of attention. During this time, slavery was becoming an aggressive and militant issue. In 1850 congress passed a fugitive state law that basically said run away slaves could be arrested without a warrant, they were to be denied trial by jury, and they were not allowed to testify in court in their defense. Sojourner preached and spoke about her life as a slave, and gave counseling to former and freed slaves. During Sojourners speaking tour, she visited 22 out of the 50 United States. All of her lectures were unrehearsed; she was a determined, confident and never intimidated woman.
